Creative Visionary and Storyteller
Nickolas Gaines is a trailblazer in creative direction, curatorial innovation, and storytelling, crafting experiences that transcend traditional boundaries. At the heart of his work is a commitment to elevating underrepresented narratives and redefining cultural landscapes.
His forthcoming 2025 curated series, Worthy: The Limitless Beauty of the Black Aesthetic, is a powerful exploration of Black identity and beauty. This project celebrates the richness of Black hair textures, skin tones, and innate style while challenging societal norms, fostering self-love, and sparking global conversations about race and worthiness. As Chief Curator and through contributions to leading galleries, Nickolas has been instrumental in earning top recognition from esteemed publications like D (Dallas) Magazine. His exhibitions are immersive experiences, combining curatorial vision with artist talks, community forums, mental health workshops, and meditation circles. By addressing themes such as faith, racial identity, hip-hop culture, gender, sexuality, and mental health, Nickolas fosters connection, healing, and meaningful dialogue.
Nickolas’s storytelling journey began early, making his network television debut at 14 as a contributor on PBS’s Don’t Believe the Hype, where he explored the power of media to challenge societal perceptions for youth of color. Decades later, his early thought leadership was spotlighted in HBO’s 2023 documentary Timebomb: Y2K, a testament to his enduring commitment to amplifying voices and shaping cultural narratives. As a teenager, he also became a national spokesperson for the American Lung Association’s Target Market anti-smoking campaign and contributed as a staff writer for local and state newspapers, covering politics, education, pop culture, and current events. At 15, Nickolas was appointed to the Young Citizens Advisory Task Force under Secretary of State Marilyn Kiffmeyer and collaborated with Governor Jesse Ventura, using news media to address youth civic engagement across Minnesota. These formative experiences laid the foundation for his ongoing commitment to storytelling and advocacy in leadership.
In podcasting, Nickolas’s creative projects have earned recognition from Apple and The New York Times. He also produced and co-hosted Black on Black Time on the REVRY network, a groundbreaking media platform uplifting LGBTQ+ creators and stories. The show delved into conversations on liberation, race, sexuality, gender, and equity, resonating deeply with audiences and earning critical acclaim for its authentic and thought-provoking content. Nickolas’s perspective, thought leadership, and storytelling have made him a sought-after contributor on podcasts and national platforms discussing identity, faith, masculinity, fatherhood, and mental health, including NPR's Morning Edition. His fashion and creativity have been featured in Rolling Stone, Okayplayer, Okay Africa, Vogue, Ebony, Complex, Allure, Essence, and Afropunk.
Over the years, Nickolas has keynoted more than 75 university events, including Penn State, as well as a myriad of national conferences and state conventions.
Education Reform and Policy Advocacy
Nickolas has driven transformative change in education, spearheading district-wide professional development in culturally responsive pedagogy, trauma-informed practices, and social-emotional learning (SEL). He designed and implemented a comprehensive SEL curriculum with 180 lesson modules, piloted in a Dallas-area school district and later expanded across seven high school campuses, setting a statewide benchmark for student support and emotional intelligence.
As a recipient of the 2021 Texas Education Policy Institute (TEPI) Fellowship, he spent a year working with the Texas state legislature, championing marginalized students through statewide SEL curriculum implementation, equitable discipline policies, and efforts to dismantle the school-to-prison pipeline. His advocacy, thought leadership, and expertise contributed to the passage of key state legislation, enabling school districts to allocate funds for SEL programs. These initiatives cultivate self-awareness, emotional regulation, social awareness, positive relationships, and responsible decision-making—positively impacting students across Texas. His strategic leadership in passing education-focused legislation exemplifies his ability to bridge policy and practice for sustainable impact.
Military Leadership and Impact
Nickolas’s military service is defined by his unwavering commitment to soldier and family readiness, suicide prevention, and leadership development. As a former Army Chaplain Corps officer, he provided spiritual support and moral guidance to soldiers, helping them navigate moral injury, crisis of faith, grief, trauma, and reintegration through pastoral care, compassionate counseling, and addressing existential questions.
As Program Manager of the Army Reserve Suicide Prevention Program, he oversaw strategic planning, budget management, and training directives, reaching 13,000 Soldiers annually across 27 states. He developed and delivered suicide prevention curricula and training for Army leaders, Soldiers, and civilians while providing clinical counseling for trauma and crisis management. As a Master Facilitator, Nickolas directed workshops and curriculum development to enhance leadership and life skills. His contributions included initiatives supporting vulnerable populations, such as LGBTQ and HIV+ Soldiers, with a strong focus on mental health, suicide prevention, and combat trauma. Nickolas also delivered impactful workshops and keynotes at over 125 Yellow Ribbon Family Reintegration Program and Strong Bonds events.
His work in suicide prevention, trauma counseling, and crisis management ensured that soldiers and their families received the necessary support to navigate difficult times. His efforts contributed to a more inclusive, responsive environment within the military, particularly for those facing unique challenges.
Innovative Leadership in Nonprofit and DEI Strategy
Nickolas has designed transformative programs in the nonprofit sector to deepen societal impact, including national curricula on anti-racism and DEI used by leading organizations. Through workshop facilitation and developing frameworks for fellowship programs, he has empowered participants to champion equity and advance racial inclusion across education, health, and criminal justice sectors.
As a proven leader in consulting, organizational transformation, and public policy, Nickolas is known for driving systemic change and delivering impactful solutions. He has led major initiatives for nonprofits, federal agencies, and educational institutions, including the implementation of a federal executive order focused on Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA). His work embedded DEIA across agency programs, resulting in a more inclusive workforce. Additionally, he designed the framework for another federal executive order advancing racial equity, creating policy and programmatic changes ensuring lasting improvements in equity and support for underserved communities.
